Nothing beats the heat like a classic Hawaiian tropical drink. We wanted to help everyone celebrate Aloha Friday with a few classic tropical cocktails you can enjoy while you’re here with us in Kauai, or while you’re at home daydreaming about the next vacation.

Of course, not all tropical drinks are true Hawaiian classics, but everything on this list is a surefire winner for Hawaiian tropical concoctions.

Mai Tai

The Mai Tai is where it all began with Hawaiian tropical drinks, and the most famous incarnation is the Royal Hawaiian Hotel from more than half a century ago.

Ingredients – 1 oz each dark rum, light rum and orange curacao, mixed with 2 ounces OJ and .5 ounces lime juice, with a splash of simple syrup. Can be garnished with pineapples, cherries and mint.

Blue Hawaii

Another classic from Hawaii which has been around for more than half a century, beginning with the Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort, the aptly named Blue Hawaii is a go-to choice for any visitor.

Ingredients – .75 oz each light rum and vodka, with .5 ounce blue curacao, mixed with 3 ounces pineapple juice and 1 oz sweet and sour mix. Can be garnished with pineapple, cherry or a lime wedge.

Lava Flow

When you’re in the mood for something a bit creamier in the form of a frozen cocktail, the Lava Flow may be best. Lots of variations, starting with some classic ingredients and flavors

Ingredients – 1 oz light rum, 1 oz Malibu coconut or other coconut rum, 2 ounces each pineapple juice and coconut cream, 1 banana, handful of strawberries. Blend the rum and strawberries together, and pour into a tall glass. Then blend the remaining ingredients, and pour into the drink for a great visual as the “lava” flows up to the top of the glass.

Hawaiian Margarita

Everyone loves a good margarita. Well, instead of staying in Mexico, pay a visit to Hawaii with this variation of the margarita.

Ingredients – 1.5 ounces tequila, .5 oz triple sec, handful fresh strawberries and chopped pineapple, splash of sour mix. Blend together with 1 cup ice and garnish with pineapples and strawberries.

Kama’Aina Cocktail

Guests at Koloa Landing® love making use of our on-site Kama’Aina Surf & Sport shop for a variety of water sports, activities and excursions. Well, when you’re done, you can check out the Kama’Aina cocktail as well.

Ingredients – 1 oz gin, .5 oz triple sec, 1 oz coconut syrup and 1 oz lemon juice shaken with ice. Pour into a tall glass and top off with seven up. Garnish with a pineapple slice or maraschino cherry.
